What type of carbohydrate is Amylose?

Amylose is classified as a polysaccharide because it is a long-chain carbohydrate composed of numerous glucose units linked together by α(1→4) glycosidic bonds. Polysaccharides are characterized by their structure, which consists of large molecules made up of many repeating units, and in the case of amylose, it typically forms part of starch along with amylopectin.

In contrast, monosaccharides are the simplest form of carbohydrates, consisting of single sugar molecules like glucose or fructose. Disaccharides, such as sucrose or lactose, are composed of two monosaccharide units. Oligosaccharides are made up of a small number of monosaccharide units, typically ranging from three to ten. Since amylose contains a significantly larger number of glucose units, it falls into the category of polysaccharides.
